Grade 4 and 5 really put on a great show today! The Upper primary students took us on a journey through Deepavali. Starting with its origin and showing a wonderful variety of dances, skits and drama! Fantastic Job guys and gals!
What is Deepavali?
A colorful festival that is celebrated by all Hindus worldwide is Deepavali, which is also known as the festival of lights. This festival usually falls around late October and November. One important practice that the Hindus follow during the festival is to light oil lamps in their homes on Deepavali morning. By lighting the oil lamps, the Hindus are thanking the gods for the happiness, knowledge, peace and wealth that they have received. The Hindus consider Deepavali as one of the most important festivals to celebrate. -- Thanks essortment.com!
During the festival people are actually celebrating the triumph of Good over evil. Lord Rama is a personification of all good virtues & Ravana with his 10 heads symbolizes the vices. So when Lord Rama killed Ravana, it is actually making all the bad things come to an end. -- Thanks Juhi Sharma!
For a quick glimpse and some of the festivities take a look at the video below!
Currently in Social Studies we are learning about “A Communities Geography”. Throughout this lesson will be talking about many different types of land features that help make up our communities. We will also be learning about how climate and plant life affect how people live in their communities.
Today, as a fun way to learn the differences between some of the different land forms we played a “Search Game”
Below is a “How to Guide” on how to play the game. I will be posting a video of the class playing just as soon as I get it edited.
Thanks for checking in =)
How to Play: “The Search Game”
Materials
Create a worksheet that shows the vocabulary words you would like the students to make a connection with as well as a place where they can mark down the number of the correct picture and the definition of the word.
Create slips of paper that have the definitions of the words the students are about to find.
Take the pictures that you have printed or taken and number them randomly.
Set Up
Take the definitions and the pictures and place them randomly around the room. It’s also fun to have a couple of helpers.
Pass out the worksheet to each of your students.
Explain the rules.
I will usually put some music on in the background while they are working. Most of the time it’s something without words.
Rules
Explain that students will try to locate the picture that connects with the vocabulary word on the worksheet, them mark down the number in the space provided.
Explain that students will then try to find the correct definition that goes along with the vocabulary word and picture. Write the definition in the space provided in the worksheet.
Explain that this is individual work and that they should not share their answers with anyone else.
Students may use their textbook as a guide or to help them understand the vocabulary words they are looking for. (Tell them to try on their own first, then if they still don’t understand have them check the text.)
Options
Explain that the first 3-5 people who bring all the correct answers will receive a prize. (optional)
Set a time limit if necessary to complete the game.
The time has come again to unleash a new episode of Wells W51TV! Check out all the cool happenings and please feel free to leave any comments about the show!
Currently in Social Studies we are learning about different types of communities such as; Cities, Suburbs and Rural Towns. Students were assigned to create a poster that gave information on the different communities and then present them to the class. Here are a few pictures from today’s class and two videos.
